What counts as an assist?

An assist is credited to the player whose final pass, cross or touch directly sets up a goal for a teammate. Most come from a pass or a cross, but a player can also be credited when their shot rebounds off the goalkeeper or a defender to a teammate who scores. Goals from won penalties are not usually assisted, and the rules on deflections and set pieces vary by data provider, which is the root of the differences you will see below.

Lionel Messi sits clear at the top of the all-time list. The totals below are Opta's, covering official matches only, with figures reconstructed for players from before assists were formally recorded, which is why Ferenc Puskás and Pelé rank so high.

One caveat on the older names: the totals for Puskás, Pelé and Cruyff are Opta reconstructions from before assists were logged live, so treat them as careful approximations rather than exact counts.

The creators behind the numbers

Messi's total is built on two decades of through balls and pull-backs for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Argentina. The surprises are Dušan Tadić and the Brazilian playmaker Alex, two names without Messi's fame who reached the top six through years of high-volume creation in the Eredivisie, the Bundesliga and Brazil. Just below the leaders sit the household creators of the recorded era, Kevin De Bruyne, Mesut Özil, Thomas Müller and Luis Suárez, each a decade or more at the top.

Giggs' 162 looks safe for years. With Kevin De Bruyne now at Napoli, Mohamed Salah on 94 is the only name near the top still creating in the Premier League, and even he is a long way back.

The single-season record changed hands in 2025/26. Bruno Fernandes set up the opener against Brighton on the final day to reach 21 assists in a season, beating the 20 shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

How assists are counted, and why totals differ

An assist goes to the player whose final pass, cross or touch directly sets up a goal. The idea is simple, but the bookkeeping is where the numbers part ways, and it explains every discrepancy on this page.

Three things drive the differences. The first is the era. Official assist data only became standard from the 1990s and 2000s, so all-time lists graft modern records onto retrospective counts of older players, and no two historians reconstruct those identically. That is why Puskás appears anywhere from the high 300s to over 400 depending on the list.

The second is the rulebook. Strict data sets apply firm criteria on whether a goal that follows a deflection, a rebound or a won set piece earns an assist, while looser ones are more generous, which inflates their totals.

The third is whether secondary assists count, meaning the pass before the assist. Most headline numbers ignore them, but some data sets include them, which is enough to shift a career total by dozens.
