What are player matchups?

A player matchup is a head to head bet on which of two players records more of a single stat in a match: shots, shots on target, fouls, goals, assists, tackles or cards. Bookmakers brand the same market in their own way. Betfair lists them as Matchups and runs them on shots, fouls, shots on target, assists and more. Kambi bookmakers such as BetMGM call the market Player v Player and price up shots, goals, shots on target and assists. Altenar bookmakers run the same thing under the name Player H2H.

This is the calculator side of those markets. Pick two players and a stat, set the run of matches you want to base it on (the last 20 games, a single season such as 2025/26, a club or national team spell, or home and away only) and the tool works out the fair odds for who records most across three outcomes: player one, the draw, or player two. Compare those fair odds against the Matchups, Player v Player or Player H2H price on offer to see where a bet looks good value. For full season totals side by side instead, use the player comparison tool.

How the fair odds are worked out

We take each player's per game numbers from the matches you filter to, then compare every one of player one's games against every one of player two's and count how often each ends up with more. That share becomes the fair odds for player one, the draw, or player two.

The comparison is adjusted for minutes. A player who is often subbed off, or who comes on from the bench, plays fewer minutes, so each game is scaled to a shared minutes baseline before it is compared. That stops a strong per 90 player being dragged down just for spending less time on the pitch.

Next to the odds you also get the numbers that drive them: P90 (output per 90 minutes), the hit rate (how often a player cleared the line), the average per game, and blanks (games with none). Two players can average the same and still have very different hit rates and blank counts, which is usually where the value sits.

Two filters shape the sample. "Started only" limits it to games the player started, which is how these markets are graded. "Super sub" adds the stats of whoever came on for the player after they were subbed off, so you see the full output from that position rather than one player's minutes. Bookmakers settle on the named starter, so keep Super sub off when pricing a real Matchups, Player v Player or Player H2H bet, and turn it on when you want the position's complete numbers.

Player matchup FAQ

What are player matchups?

A player matchup is a head to head bet on which of two players records more of one stat in a match: shots, shots on target, fouls, goals, assists, tackles or cards. Betfair lists them as Matchups, Kambi bookmakers such as BetMGM call them Player v Player, and Altenar bookmakers call them Player H2H. They are the same bet under different names. This tool works out who actually comes out on top more often.

Is this a Betfair matchups calculator?

Yes. Betfair brands the market as Matchups and runs it on shots, fouls, shots on target, assists and more, and this tool works out the fair odds for it. It does the same job for Kambi Player v Player markets on BetMGM and others, and for Altenar Player H2H markets, since all three are the same bet.

How do I research a player matchup bet?

Pick the two players and a stat, set the run of matches you want to base it on, and the tool lays out each player's per game record side by side plus the fair odds for who records most. Compare those fair odds to the price on offer to spot where a matchup looks good value.

Which stats can I match players up on?

Shots, shots on target, goals, assists, tackles, fouls, cards, key passes and more, with filters for recent form, competition, season, home or away and position so the sample matches the bet you are looking at.

Do player matchup markets count substitute appearances?

Usually not. Bookmakers tend to settle player matchups on starters only, so a player who comes off the bench does not count. That is why the calculator defaults to started games. You can toggle super-sub appearances back in for a fuller sample, but for grading a Matchups, Player v Player or Player H2H bet, started only is the closer match.

Is the matchup calculator free?

Yes. Picking two players, comparing their per game numbers and seeing the fair odds is free, with no account needed.

Can I match up players from different teams or leagues?

Yes. Put any two players against each other across the 115+ leagues we cover, whatever club or country they play in.
