Match total corners covers the combined corner count for both teams across 90 minutes. A corner is awarded when the ball crosses the goal line last touched by a defending player and is one of the most tactical stats in football. Teams that attack down the flanks, press high, and dominate possession tend to generate corners at consistent rates because their style forces opposition defenders wide and into their own goal area.

The 9.5 line is the most widely offered on bookmakers. The 8.5 line suits lower-volume games and typically prices at shorter odds. The 10.5 line requires an above-average corner count and is more common in attack-heavy fixtures between possession-oriented sides. Average corners per match for each team is shown in the table to help assess whether the line being offered reflects the typical output for that fixture.

League averages matter significantly in corner markets. Some competitions produce far more corners per match than others due to tactical norms, pitch dimensions, and the distribution of playing styles within the league. The top leagues table below shows which competitions average the highest corner counts this season, along with hit rates for each of the main lines. For a full breakdown, see best leagues for corners.

Team Corners For and Against

Team corners for shows how often a side wins at least a set number of corners in their matches. This is the input for team corner handicap markets and individual team corner total bets, where bookmakers offer a line on one side's corner count rather than the match total. Teams that press high and attack with width accumulate corners structurally rather than as a product of result or opposition quality.

Team corners against reflects how often the opposition wins corners against a specific side. A team with a high corners-against rate tends to defend deep or narrow, inviting wide play and crosses that generate corners. This figure is useful for assessing the corner market from the opposition side in upcoming fixtures. A team with a high for rate playing against one with a high against rate points to a fixture where corner volume for the attacking side is likely to be above average.

The most corners market, which shows which team wins more corners in the match, is shown in the section below. Teams with a large gap between their for and against averages tend to win this market regardless of match result, since the corner battle is more a function of tactical style than scoreline.

How many corners are there in a football match on average?

Most professional matches produce somewhere between 9 and 11 corners. The Premier League averaged just under 10 per game across the 2024/25 season, and most top divisions sit in the same range, which is why bookmakers cluster their lines at 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5. Wide, attacking sides push a fixture above that, while compact, low-possession games fall below it.

The top leagues table above ranks every competition by average corners per match this season, and the best leagues for corners guide breaks down where the over lines land most often.

Corner Markets FAQ

What counts as a corner in football betting?

A corner kick is awarded when the ball goes out of play over the goal line having last been touched by a defending player. Own goals do not affect corner counts. Corners in extra time do not count toward 90-minute corner markets unless the bookmaker specifies otherwise.

Why do corner markets use lines like 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5?

The .5 suffix ensures there is always a winner. Corner counts are whole numbers, so a 9.5 line cannot result in a push. A match with exactly 9 corners settles as under 9.5. A match with 10 corners settles as over 9.5.

What is the most corners market?

The most corners market settles on whichever team wins more corners during the match. It is a three-way market on some books (home, away, tie) or a two-way market excluding a draw. It is separate from match total corner markets and depends entirely on the relative corner counts of each side.

Do corners count if they are not taken?

The corner is recorded when it is awarded, not when it is taken. A corner that is flagged by the referee and then not taken before play restarts still counts. In practice this is rare, and corner counts in match data reflect awarded corners.

Which leagues produce the most corners?

This varies by season, but leagues featuring possession-heavy sides with wide formations and high pressing intensity tend to produce more corners. The top leagues table on this page ranks competitions by average corners per match this season.

Corner trends by team over the last recent matches are available on the team trends page. The fixture scout lets you filter upcoming fixtures by corner conditions with hit rate thresholds and live odds where available.
