A shot on target is any attempt that would have entered the goal if not saved by the goalkeeper or blocked by another player on the line. Shots that hit the post or bar without being touched by the keeper do not count as shots on target. This definition is consistent across data providers, though minor discrepancies can occur in live data before matches are verified.
Shots on target is a stronger indicator of attacking intent than total shots because it filters out speculative attempts and long-range efforts that have a low probability of resulting in a goal. Teams that generate high SOT totals consistently tend to have clinical attacking units or tactical systems that create high-quality chances close to goal. These patterns are more stable across opponents than total shot counts.
The 9.5 match total line is the most widely offered on UK bookmakers for this market. The 8.5 line suits tighter, lower-tempo fixtures. The 10.5 line requires both sides to be actively threatening and is most relevant when two attacking teams with high individual SOT averages meet. League averages in the table below show which competitions produce enough shots on target to regularly clear each line.

Team SOT For and Against
Team SOT for shows how often a side generates at least a given number of shots on target per match. This is most directly useful for player props markets where anytime scorer odds are informed by the volume of shots a team creates, and for team total SOT markets where available. Teams with high for rates tend to maintain that output across different opponents because it reflects the structure of how they play rather than the quality of the opposition.
Team SOT against shows how often a side concedes that level of shot activity. A team conceding high SOT has a defence that gives opponents sustained access to good positions inside or around the penalty area. Pairing a high SOT-for side against a high SOT-against side is the clearest setup for match total SOT markets, and also provides context for goals markets since shot volume correlates with scoring frequency over larger samples.

SOT Markets and Related Bets
Shots on target markets are less widely offered than goals or corners but are available on most top-division fixtures at Bet365 and Kambi network bookmakers. The market is settled on verified post-match data, not live data, so in-play settlement may be delayed while the official count is confirmed.
Match total SOT
Combined shots on target for both teams across 90 minutes. Lines are typically offered at 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5. Settlement is based on the official post-match SOT figure, not the live count shown during the game.
Team SOT markets
A line on one team's individual shot on target total. Less commonly offered than match total markets but available on selected top-division fixtures. Useful for fixtures where one side is expected to dominate possession and create opportunities.
Most shots on target
Settles on whichever team records more shots on target in the match. Available as a 1x2 market or two-way excluding a draw. Possession-dominant teams with structured attacking systems tend to win this market consistently regardless of scoreline.
SOT and goals relationship
SOT is used alongside goals data for anytime scorer and first goalscorer research. A player who generates high shot volume relative to their position is more likely to find the net than one with lower output. The player props finder filters by shots on target with live odds from multiple bookmakers.
First shots on target
Some bookmakers offer a market on which team registers the first shot on target in the match. Teams that press high from kick-off and create early chances tend to win this market at a higher rate than their overall SOT share suggests. This market is less widely available than match total SOT but appears on selected top-division fixtures.
Player shots on target props
Bookmakers offer over/under lines on individual player shots on target, typically at 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5. These are available on selected top-division fixtures at Bet365 and Kambi network bookmakers. Players in high-SOT teams who take shots consistently from regular positions are the most relevant for this market. Use the player props finder to filter by SOT with live odds.

Most shots on target in the Premier League
The Premier League players who rack up the most shots on target are the high-volume strikers and wingers who shoot often from good positions. The table above ranks them this season across the Premier League and 115+ leagues, sortable by total or per game. At team level, the sides that dominate shots on target tend to be the possession-heavy attacks that work the ball into the box rather than settling for distance.

Shots on Target FAQ
What does SOT mean in soccer?
SOT stands for shot on target. A shot on target is any goal attempt that would have entered the goal if not stopped by the goalkeeper or a defender on the line, plus all goals scored. Shots that hit the post or the bar without being saved do not count as on target.
How is shots on target hit rate calculated?
Hit rate is the percentage of a team's domestic league matches this season where the shots on target line was reached. For team SOT over 4.5, it is the share of matches where the team produced five or more shots on target. The figure refreshes after each match.
What lines do bookmakers offer for shots on target?
Match total shots on target lines are typically offered between 7.5 and 11.5. Team SOT lines are commonly 3.5 and 4.5. Player shots on target lines run from 0.5 up to 2.5 or 3.5 for high-volume strikers and wingers. Most bookmakers only offer overs on player markets.
Why are SOT predictions hard?
Shot on target volume depends on opposition shape, game state, and where in the pitch the team is being allowed to shoot from. A team that dominates possession against a deep block can generate many shots that are blocked or saved without ever counting as on target. Cross-reference team SOT for and against rates rather than relying on the team's own SOT averages alone.
What is the most shots on target market?
Most shots on target settles on whichever team produces the higher SOT count in the match. It is offered as a three-way market on most bookmakers, with home, away, and tie selections. Tie outcomes are slightly more common than in match goal markets because SOT counts are smaller integers.
Do shots on target in extra time count?
No. Shots on target produced in extra time or penalty shootouts do not count toward 90-minute SOT markets. Settlement is based on the regulation 90 minutes plus injury time only.
