First half goals markets settle on the number of goals scored between kick-off and the half-time whistle only. Goals scored in added time at the end of the first half count. The full-time result has no bearing on first half markets. A match that finishes 0-0 can still settle over 0.5 first half goals if one goal was scored before the break and the second half produced nothing.
First half goals rates are structurally lower than second half rates across almost all major leagues. Teams tend to be more cautious in the opening period, defensive shape is harder to break down before fatigue sets in, and neither side has made substitutions to change the pattern of play. The over 0.5 first half goals market reflects this: it hits in the majority of matches across top leagues but at a meaningfully lower rate than the equivalent second half market.
The over 1.5 first half line is where the spread between teams becomes more relevant. High-pressing sides, teams that score early from set pieces, and sides playing in high-tempo leagues are more likely to produce two or more first half goals. The top leagues table below shows which competitions average the most first half goals this season.

Half-Time Markets
Half-time markets settle independently of the full-time result. A team can win the half-time result market and lose the match, and vice versa. This independence is what makes half-time markets useful for building positions that are structurally different from full-time bets, rather than just a way of accessing shorter odds on the same outcome.
The half-time result 1x2 market is the most commonly offered. Some bookmakers also offer first half Asian handicap, first half double chance, and first half over/under goals as standalone markets on selected fixtures. Availability varies significantly by bookmaker and competition. First half markets tend to be available on top-division European fixtures and less consistently on lower-league or international matches.
Half-time result accumulators are a common use case for this data. Identifying teams with consistently strong first half win rates that differ meaningfully from their full-time record gives a basis for building half-time accas where the leg odds are not simply derived from the full-time market. Teams that start fast and then manage games tend to show this pattern across a full season.
First half goals data also feeds into correct score research. The half-time correct score market requires predicting the exact scoreline at the break. Teams with high over 1.5 first half rates but low over 2.5 rates tend to produce 1-1 or 1-0 half-time scorelines at a higher frequency, which is the kind of distributional detail that correct score markets require. For second half markets and how they compare, see the second half stats page.
First Half Stats FAQ
What does over 0.5 first half goals mean?
It means at least one goal must be scored before the half-time whistle. The full-time scoreline does not matter. A 1-0 match where the goal came in the second half settles as under 0.5 first half goals. A 0-0 second half does not affect the market if the first half had a goal.
Are first half stats useful for betting?
Yes, because half-time markets settle independently of the full-time result. A team can win the half-time market and lose the match. The first half hit rates on this page show which teams are consistently fast starters versus slow starters, which is the input for half-time result and first half over/under markets.
Are more goals scored in the first or second half?
Second halves average more goals than first halves across nearly every major league. Teams open up after the break, substitutions change the shape, and defensive concentration drops. The first half over 0.5 market still hits in most matches in top leagues, but at a lower rate than the second half equivalent.
Do first half injury time goals count?
Yes. Goals scored in added time at the end of the first half count toward first half markets. The cut-off is the half-time whistle, including stoppage time, not the 45-minute mark on the clock.
What is the half-time result market?
Half-time result is a 1x2 bet on whether the home team is winning, drawing or losing at the break. It settles on the half-time scoreline only. The first half result table on this page ranks teams by how often they are winning at the break across their domestic league fixtures this season.
How is the first half hit rate calculated?
Hit rate is the percentage of a team's domestic league matches this season where the first half met the condition. For first half over 0.5, it is the share of matches with at least one goal scored before half time. The figure refreshes daily as new matches finish.
