Tackles measure defensive workload. Players and teams near the top of these tables are the ones doing the most ball-winning, often because they sit deeper or face stronger opposition. It is a useful signal for player card markets, since heavy tacklers in strict leagues pick up bookings at a higher rate.
For disciplinary context, the card stats page shows which players and teams accumulate the most bookings. For tackle and card props with live odds, use the player props finder.
Most tackles in the Premier League
The players who make the most tackles are the defensive and central midfielders who cover the most ground in contested areas, with deeper-defending full-backs and centre-backs close behind. The tables above rank the most tackles this season across the Premier League and 115+ leagues, by season total or per game.
Tackles and interceptions are two different defensive actions that are often mixed up. Our tackles vs interceptions guide explains the difference and when each one matters.
Tackles FAQ
What counts as a tackle?
A tackle is recorded when a player makes contact with the ball to dispossess an opponent or stop their progress. Data providers count both successful tackles and attempts, depending on the metric. The leaderboard here uses total tackles made.
Which players make the most tackles?
Central and defensive midfielders usually top tackle counts because they cover the most ground in contested areas. Full backs and centre backs also feature, particularly in sides that defend deep and face sustained pressure.
Does a high tackle count mean a strong defence?
Not on its own. A team can rack up tackles because it spends long spells without the ball. Tackle volume describes defensive workload, not defensive quality. Read it alongside goals conceded and clean sheet rate for a fuller picture.
Why is there a minimum appearance filter?
A single high-volume match can distort a per-game average for a player with very few appearances. The table only includes players with at least five appearances so the figures reflect a consistent role.
