About total goals predictions

A short read on what the over/under market is, how the FootyMetrics AI picks a line, and how to read the cards above.

What is a total goals prediction?

Total goals is a bet on how many goals the two sides score combined during a single match. The bookmaker sets a line. Pick over and you need more goals than that number; pick under and you need fewer. We cover four half-goal lines (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5) so there are no pushes.

2.5 is the headline line because it sits near the average for most top leagues. 1.5 is the safer call for low-scoring fixtures. 3.5 and 4.5 are for matches where the AI expects one or both sides to run riot.

How the FootyMetrics AI picks a line

Each fixture has four overs and four unders to choose from. The AI scores all eight selections and we surface the one with the biggest gap between its probability and the bookmaker's implied probability. That gap is the edge.

The inputs that matter most for total goals are each side's recent scoring rate, the defensive numbers (goals conceded, clean sheet rate), the league's scoring profile, and the head to head where there's enough history to count. A blunt attack against a stingy defence often flags Under 2.5 even if it is not the most popular pick on the slip. A wide-open league with two strong attacks pushes the call toward Over 3.5. The strongest line is whichever one carries the biggest edge, not whichever one is most familiar.

How to read a total goals pick

Each card shows the fixture, the kick-off, the picked line (e.g. Over 2.5 goals), the AI's probability, and the best current bookmaker price across the books we track. The edge is the gap between our probability and the implied probability from the price.

Picks are sorted by probability by default. Switch to highest edge if you'd rather see where the AI thinks the books are most wrong.

Total goals sits alongside the other markets on the predictions hub. If you'd rather a yes/no on whether both sides find the net, see both teams to score. For per-side scoring lines, see team goals. More on the AI behind the call sits on the how it works page.

Frequently asked questions

What counts toward total goals?

Goals from both sides during the 90 minutes plus injury time. Extra time and penalty shootouts in cup ties do not count. A 2-1 final after 90 minutes is Over 2.5; a 1-1 is Under 2.5.

Which line is the most common pick?

2.5 sits closest to the average across most leagues, so it shows up most often as the AI's strongest call. 1.5 picks appear when both sides are blunt or the defences are tight. 3.5 and 4.5 land when the AI expects a goal-heavy match.

Can a total goals bet push?

Not on the lines we cover. Every line ends in .5, so you can never land exactly on it. The result either clears it or it doesn't.

Can I see predictions for tomorrow?

Yes. The date tabs above the grid run from today through six days out. Pick the date you want and the cards refresh.
